Many people have helped me with my research into Blackmore Vale WW1 War Memorials and I am indebted to them.

Some who were immensely helpful have now sadly passed away, like Miss Grace Sherrin, my aunt Miss Phyllis Rowland, Major Robert Barton and Peter Jackson.

The initial trawl of public records induced travel further afield to places such as Taunton Records Office, Yeovil Reference Library, Dorchester Military Museum, the West Country Studies Library, the Imperial War Museum and RAF Hendon in London.

Many original sources have been consulted including Census information, Parish Registers, Electoral Rolls, Newspapers, Diaries, Parish Council Minutes and Church magazines (thanks to our vicar, Peter Hallet).

Lack of information is one of the greatest hindrances to recreating the past and one of the greatest ways to secure our heritage, must surely be to create a place, a village archive, where donations of memorabilia, photographs, and memories can be kept safely for local study, for our generation and for our children’s.
